Retreat of the Polar Ice-cap

With the retreat of the polar ice cap (New Quebec – glacier) the whole Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean region became free of ice.  This de-glaciation fashioned the countryside by creating lakes, fjords, plains, mountains and rivers.  As for the vegetation, it appeared some 8,000 years ago and was dominated by conifers.
