We, Pekuakamiulnuatsh, the First Nation of the Pekuakami (Lac-Saint-Jean), are at our roots a nomadic people i.e. our life-style is based on organised migration over the territory which we occupy and we are of the great Algonquin Family of Eastern Canada. At the time, our ancestors lived mainly by hunting and fishing and gathering wild fruits. As they had the run of immense territories, they used the lakes and rivers as access routes. Thus the hydrographic network constituted their roads, at the base of their numerous migrations in Nitassinan.
Human occupation in the Saguenay – Lac St. Jean region increased for about 5,000 years. It was at this period that the history of our people began; the Pekuakamiulnuatsh, were in these territories well before the Christian era, the construction of the pyramids in Egypt or the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America.
Follow our history, step by step, by means of our narratives, while crossing our territories and navigating our rivers to reach the many places where our history is written and where it continues.
Welcome to the Pekuakamiulnuatsh; welcome to our home !
