The beaver, as currency
At the base of all the fur-bearing animals coveted by commerce, was the beaver, due to the quality of its fur, its availability and its accessibility. During various periods, the beaver could be exchanged for certain necessities such as guns, traps and food that contributed to our survival, notably during periods of famine.
