Harnessing the rivers

To the damage caused by floating logs on waterways, one must add those engendered by the construction of dams and hydroelectric installations. Concerning dams for regulating the water, the state had the same laissez-faire attitude: all development initiative was accepted, if not encouraged.  The development and invasion proceeded in an anarchic manner and it was not possible, or very difficult for the Pekuakamiulnuatsh to defend their fundamental interests.  Over a good number of years before the nationalisation of electricity by the Quebec Province hydroelectricity has proliferated on a large number of rivers, upsetting the traditional life and diverting the routes (portages) used for a long time by our ancestors.
