The first canoes were made from birch bark.  They could be moved easily because of their light weight.  The Pekuakamiulnuatsh used them mainly for moving to from and on their territories.  The interesting details were that, even though fragile, one could always find all the things needed to repair them wherever you were.

The canoe has, for a long time, been the means of transportation  ‘par excellence’ for the Pekuakamiulnuatsh.  It justified using the waterways for accessing the territories.

Gradually the birch bark canoe has been replaced by the canvas canoe that is heavier but more resistant.
