Mashteuiatsh and territory
Over the years, and despite the «technological and modernisation» development of Mashteuiatsh, the ties with the territory have never been interrupted. For us, that which came to be called the Nitassinan, is much more than a territory where we have access.
The Nitassinan is the territory that is frequented regularly or occasionally for hunting or gathering. Given the close ties with the earth, the Pekuakamiulnu consider that it belongs to them. This idea engenders an attachment, an affectionate relationship: the earth belongs to no one except the Creator who allows us to live here; He is the earth; He is the guardian (source: Vers l’établissement du Programme de formation des Pekuakamiulnuatsh, Services éducatifs, Conseil des Montagnais, 2006).
