Ecclesiastical missions
It was in 1625 that the missionary era started with the arrival of the Jesuits. Ten years earlier, in the spring of 1615, the first four missionaries appeared in Canada, more precisely at Tadoussac.
For their part, it was in 1841 that the Oblates of Immaculate-Mary missionaries arrived in Canada. Three years later the Archbishop of Quebec charged the Oblates with the responsibility of ensuring church services over the enormous Saguenay territory. With the aim of maintaining religious practices amongst the settlers who came to the region, the Jesuits and the Oblates played a significant role in the upheavals in the life style and evangelisation of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh.
